LAZIO WINES - VILLA SIMONE, MONTE PORZIO CATONE

In the early 1980s, Piero Costantini purchased the vineyards that once belonged to Cardinal Pallotta in the municipality of Monteporzio Catone, in the heart of the Frascati winemaking tradition, with the aim of producing a highly prestigious wine capable of competing with the greatest winemaking qualities of the north. The path undertaken was long and difficult, undermined by the temptation of an easy but surely unsuccessful market. Frascati dominated international markets only thanks to its name.

The first thing was to replant new vineyards, introducing minor varieties such as Malvasia del Lazio, to the detriment of the more productive ones (Malvasia di Candia and Trebbiano) but of significantly lower quality, cultivating them with counter-espaliers and short pruning systems (guyot and spurred cordon) in order to drastically reduce productivity. Later, the entire winemaking cycle was modernized, giving ample space to cold technology.

Today the company is owned by Lorenzo Costantini, a renowned winemaker and enthusiast of Lazio wines. Lorenzo believes in Frascati and its enormous potential; he believes that the soil of the Lazio Volcano makes the wines produced in this area unique and that the climate favors the perfect ripening of the grapes; the soil and climate suitability finds its maximum expression in the cultivation of the native variety par excellence: Malvasia del Lazio, also known as Malvasia Puntinata. For the future, the aim is to produce a Frascati with 80% Malvasia del Lazio to create a unique and typical wine of the area.
