SICILIAN WINES - CANTINA PUPILLO, LA TARGIA
The Pupillo Agricultural Company was founded in 1909 occupying the extension of the ancient Targia Feud, a place rich in findings from the Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman periods, now fully included in the Archaeological Park of the Dionysian Walls. The fertile and varied soils of the Targia area have always contributed to the agricultural production of excellence, becoming renowned over the centuries also for the production of high quality wines.
Nino Pupillo has dedicated more than twenty years to giving new life to wine production in the Targia area. Encouraged by tutelary deities such as Gino Veronelli, Carlo Hauner and Giacomo Tachis, he started his first label, Solacium, in the 1990s. The mission of cultivating and revitalizing white Muscat in Syracuse is now in the hands of their sons Carmela and Sebastiano, who are also committed to the new fronts of innovation and environmental sustainability.
The Pupillo family property is located a short distance from Megara Hyblaea, one of the first Greek colonies on the Ionian coast of Sicily, precisely near the remains of the Eurialo, a fortress built in the 5th century BC. forming part of the defensive line of the Dionysian Walls. The company now occupies about one hundred hectares of partly volcanic and partly calcareous land.
The vineyards of Moscato, Catarratto, Nero d'Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in a green oasis that gently descends towards the coast, hit by the sea breeze and bathed by the clear waters of the Val d'Anapo brought from the Galermi aqueduct after an underground journey of 40 km.
DAMARETE: WHITE MOSCATO. This large Moscato Bianco vineyard is the heart of our wine production. This is the sunniest of our vineyards and is also the most complicated to irrigate and to cross with agricultural vehicles due to the spikes of rock that protrude from the thin layer of calcareous soil on which it is planted. From these vines, which are also those in production for the longest time, we produce our flagship: the Solacium passito, the dry white Cyane, the demi-sec Pollio and the new Damarete label, a recently introduced macerated white.
MILL: WHITE MOSCATO. The Mulino vineyard summarizes all the magic of the Targia area, that is a unique combination of varied terrains, its proximity to the sea, spontaneous vegetation and spring waters brought here directly by Greek colonists through the Val d'Anapo. Waters that pour into an ancient collection tank called "gebbia" by the Arabs. The guardian of the vineyard is an ancient mill which, centuries ago, contributed to the numerous productions of the village. The legend of Moscato di Siracusa could only be born here, where Nino Pupillo grafted the first vines, the most luxuriant and mature that we have.
SENIE: NERO D'AVOLA AND CATARRATTO. Although renowned for muscat, the Targia area also has a volcanic hillock inside, climbing towards the remains of the Greek fortress called Eurialo. It is precisely this unusual presence of volcanic soil that gives Nero d'Avola such a boost as to make it memorable in the panorama of reds from the Sicilian south-east. Our Catarratto is also planted in the Senie vineyard, one of the most important indigenous grape varieties as well as the most widely used in the island's white wines. On this hill overlooking the coast north of Syracuse the sea breeze provides the definitive ingredient of our recipe.
