UMBRIA WINES - MONTIONI, MONTEFALCO

UMBRIA AND ITS HILLS - The Azienda Agricola Montioni was born in 1978 in Umbria, a land full of rural life, rich in unspoiled landscapes, and jealous guardian of millenary stories.

MONTEFALCO - With just over six thousand inhabitants, Montefalco (PG) stands at the centre of three valleys in a dominant position on the territory below and, for this reason, it is called “Ringhiera della regione Umbria”(Railing of the Umbria region).

OUR LAND - Surrounded by unspoiled nature, our winery and oil mill are located on gentle slopes and covers 26 hectares of land among olive groves, vineyards and cereal crops of the Umbrian Apennines. The love for our territory and the symbiotic relationship with the surrounding environment has encouraged us, over the years, to keep intact the traditional methods while adopting new machinery and production systems increasingly sophisticated.

IN MONTEFALCO FOR MORE THEN 40 YEARS - The Azienda Agricola Montioni was born in 1978 thanks to Adeodato Montioni who started here the activity of milling olives, starting the production of the Montioni extra virgin olive oil. His work will be continued later by his son, Gabriele Montioni, until 1999. Currently, our Azienda Agricola Montioni is one of the most effervescent and dynamic Umbrian companies that is part of the 59 wineries of the Consorzio di Tutela dei Vini di Montefalco.
With them we share the objective of strengthening the reputation of Montefalco wines, through the constant improvement of all the wines of this fantastic land.

OUR WINERY - Our vineyards are located in a small hamlet of Montefalco, called Pietrauta. The type of soil present and the excellent sun exposure make it an optimal area for the cultivation of a great grape quality, perfect for the production of an extremely valuable wine. We have always cultivated the vineyards with the technique of “cordone speronato”, a precise business choice aimed at a medium-low productivity of the vine to ensure a grape with higher nutritional properties and, as a result, a red wine and a white wine of excellent quality. The four types of vine are GrechettoMerlotSangiovese and Sagrantino. The next fundamental step, then, is the harvest. The care of the grapes, from flowering to harvesting, is expressed more than ever during this delicate moment. The grapes are harvested according to the optimum ripeness of each variety. The grapes are hand-picked and placed immediately in boxes which must never exceed 30 kilograms. Once in the cellar, the grapes are cruched in the crucher-destemmer and the must is stored in barrels, where it will naturally ferment. The temperature must be constantly controlled because it should never exceed 25°-27° or the aromas of the wine will be lost. Once this phase is completed, the wine is transferred into wooden barrels with a capacity of 225 litres, then placed in the cellar. And that’s where we keep the vintages of the precious Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso, the two flagships of the Azienda Agricola Montioni and of the city of Montefalco.

RED

UMBRIA ROSSO I.G.T.

Grapes : 50% Sangiovese - 50% Merlot

If you are looking for a good Umbrian red wine, with a genuine flavour to complement your meals, Montioni Umbria Rosso is the one that suits you!

Umbria Rosso is hand-picked during the first days of September. Fermentation processes take place in steel, with a short maceration on the skins kept at controlled temperature. Finally, the refinement in the bottle lasts about 4 months.

TASTING NOTES : Visual : its intense ruby red colour with garnet reflections.

Palate : it is fresh and balanced, ranging from dry to sweet. Aroma is typical of its kind: hints of cherries in alcohol and spices are the scents that immediately reach the nose.

FOOD PAIRINGS : It goes well with your pasta dishes, especially with meat sauce and risotto; it is perfect with cured and boiled meats. It is also ideal as an aperitif.

Montefalco ROSSO D.O.C.

Grapes : 65% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 15% Sagrantino

Grapes are hand-picked from September to October, followed by a 15-day fermentation, a 12-month ageing in barrique, and finally 6 months in the bottle. Montionis’ vineyards are located at 450 meters above sea level. The production area of Montefalco Rosso D.O.C. is limited and very specific as well as the environmental and cultivation conditions of the vineyards.  The result is a Montefalco Rosso with unique characteristics.

TASTING NOTES : The bright ruby red colour anticipates the typical aroma of a young red wine, flavoured with notes of spices and ripe fruit, such as berries, plums, and wild blackberries.

FOOD PAIRINGS : The taste is dry, harmonious, and at the same time lingering, yet not aggressive. It is easy to appreciate with grilled meats, mature cheeses, and first courses with meat sauces. Serving : at about 18° and open it an hour before tasting.

Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G.

Grapes : 100% Sagrantino

Montioni Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG is a long-ageing red; after the harvest, strictly by hand, the vinification with maceration lasts more than 1 month, followed by a 24-month ageing, exclusively in French wooden barrels (barrique), and a 12-month refining in the bottle.

Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG is the Umbrian red wine par excellence. It is one of the protected wines of Umbria. It can be made exclusively from Sagrantino grapes, that grow only in this geographical area. The Azienda Agricola Montioni Sagrantino grapes are coming from the hills of Montefalco, at an altitude of 450 meters.

TASTING NOTES : A wine with a dry and full-bodied flavour, with complex and delicate aromas of blackberries, plum, vanilla, leather, and coffee. On the palate it is velvety and soft, however intense.

FOOD PAIRINGS : Perfect with grilled red meat, game, roast lamb, and mature cheeses.

Our suggestion to fully enjoy the aroma of this Sagrantino wine, is to open the bottle about 2 hours before being served and to pour the product in large glasses at a temperature of 18°.

Montefalco Sagrantino MA.GIA D.O.C.G.

ON ALLOCATION

The 2016 Ma.Gia Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G. is the new wine produced by the Azienda Agricola Montioni to celebrate a special event: the birth of Matteo and Giacomo (Ma.Gia), the fourth generation of the Montionis.

Why so special?

Our Ma.Gia Sagrantino is produced from 100% Sagrantino grapes, coming from the Montionis’ best vineyard, which is Fonte Petrella. Its grapes, carefully selected and hand-picked from the second half of October, are left in barriques to ferment spontaneously, without using selected yeasts. The wood ageing lasts 30 months in our new Barrique, a 225-litre French oak barrel, prior to the 12-month final aging in the bottle.

With a deep purple-red colour, Ma.Gia Montefalco Sagrantino recalls aromas of liquorice, black cherries, cherries in alcohol, and dark chocolate. By serving it between 18°, this wine pairs perfectly with dishes based on truffle, lamb, grilled meat, pigeon, and game.
